Being granted "exceptional status" is not an honor to be taken lightly within Canadian hockey culture as it is typically only awarded to the very best of the best young prospects as they prepare to embark on the start of their careers. Prior to becoming the first overall pick in the 2019 OHL Draft, Shane Wright joined the likes of NHL stars Connor McDavid, John Tavares, and Arron Ekblad as just the fifth player in OHL history to be deemed "exceptional" and allowed to enter the major junior ranks at the age of fifteen. While skating for the Kingston Frontenacs during his rookie campaign, Wright?s captivating elusiveness on the ice electrified hockey fans across the league as they were able to bear witness towards one of the most remarkable debut seasons in OHL history. Despite the season being cut short due to the global pandemic, Wright still managed to will the Frontenacs to a playoff qualifying finish and was named the 2020 CHL Rookie of the Year after breaking Kingston's all-time rookie goal record with 39 goals.
