The US Open has always been one of Naomi Osaka's favorite tournaments. At the 2016 US Open Osaka would reach the third round after upsetting then number 30 Coco Vandeweghe in the first round. While she would end up losing she had begun to establish herself in tennis, eventually winning 2016's WTA Newcomer of the Year. Osaka would again reach the third round of the US Open in 2017, this time notching a first round win against number 6 Angelique Kerber, this would be Osaka's first victory over a top 10 opponent of her career. Finally, in 2018, Osaka would get over the hump and win the US Open, her first grand slam title, defeating number 17 Serena Williams in the final and making her the first Japanese Grand Slam singles champion. In 2020 Osaka would win her second US Open title defeating Victoria Azarenka in the final, again notching another US Open feat.
