A lot of the success of the Colorado Avalanche can be attributed to the pairing of Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy, two of the best at their respective positions in NHL history. Sakic began his career with a Quebec Nordiques team that had not had much recent success, but immediately burst onto the scene. After being named captain in 1992-93, he helped lead the Nordiques to two playoff appearances in three years. The franchise became the Colorado Avalanche in the 1995-96 season and was trending toward another playoff berth, until a trade for Patrick Roy put them over the top to pair an established goalie with Sakic. The two helped lead Colorado to its first Stanley Cup that year, with Sakic's dominant playoff performance earning him the Conn Smythe Trophy. In 2000-01 it was Roy's turn to lead the way as his Conn Smythe Trophy performance brought the Avalanche back to the promised land with another Stanley Cup victory. With both of their numbers retired by Colorado and both players in the Avalanche Hall of Fame, Sakic and Roy will forever be tied together with the franchise.
